Val Fondillo - Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise

Vicino alle montagne, spianato sotto i passi il suolo risuona, ti dice: la Terra e' un tamburo Pensaci!
Noi, per seguirne il ritmo, dobbiamo fare attenzione ai nostri passi.

Joseph Bruchac (Indiano Navajo)

Environment

Between Myths and Legends, Val Fondillo reveals its secrets.

One of the features of Val Fondillo is the wealth of water springs. According to the ancients, each spring was sacred and dedicated to a deity; because of that, traces of ancient gods can still be found in some springs’ names:

- the "Nymph of Pomona" (Italic goddess of the Spring’s rebirth, still celebrated in the neighbouring burg of Alfedena);

- spring “Vertumnus” (the Oscan god who loved Pomona), situated near the village of Pietramara;

- spring “Jovaccia” (dedicated to Jupiter);

- spring “Tornareccia” at the foot of Mount Amaro, whose name’s etymology may derive from "Triareccia" (dedicated to the moon).

From a morphological point of view, Val Fondillo clearly has glacial origins. The valley is closed to the east by mount Amaro and costa Camosciara (which constitute the first nucleus of the National Park, and which nowadays are used as strict natural reserve), the latter characterised by inaccessible clefts and ravines possessing a sort of “dark” beauty.

Serra Gravare, dominated by mount Irto, closes the valley from the south and marks the border with Lazio. The “Bear Pass”, transit point between the regions of Lazio and Abruzzo, was formerly infested by robbers who pillaged the adventurous travellers. The ruins of an ancient fort are still there, hidden by the dense beech forest, not far from the spring known as “acqua Sfranatara”.
